I can listen to this song everyday and not get tired of it. I would like it as much as I do even if it had nothing to do with ponies, that’s how good a song I find it.

Gabe:

This is just a heads up that Wednesday is the last day to sign up for our Child’s Play Charity golf tournament. We’ll be playing golf on June 8th at the Angeles National golf course in Sunland Ca. This is actually the Friday after E3 so if you happen to be down there already the course is not too far away.

We still have some spots available. You can check out this site for all the details. We’ll have golf, food, prizes and a bouncy castle. One of those was a lie. You’ll have to come to the tournament

Tycho:

John Carmack’s bit about game stories, which are often porn stories, was controversial in the way that true things tend to be.  It isn’t always this way, and it doesn’t have to be, but it often is.

Globetrotting military shooters illustrate this maxim fairly well: it might help, next time you are embroiled in one, to assign archetypes like Pizza Boy or Lecherous Mechanic to your various pawns.  It’s not meant to be caustic, it’s simply observable.  As a generality “good” stories are additive and “extant” stories are expected; it’s possible to lose on that axis but there have to be

On Eurovision

lupestripe
6:59pm

We hold an annual Eurovision party at our house and this year was no exception. It's just a small gathering but it's usually one of the best nights of the year. Saturday evening was no exception.

I have always loved Eurovision. Partly because it appeals to my political sensibilities but also because it's great fun. Yes it's cheesy and a little crap but there is a place for that in this world, particularly when times are tough for so many people.

We imbibed Pupschlager during the Contest and I was delighted to hear Skavi tell me it was better than anything he had had at the Dewsbury Beer Festival the night before. I'll admit our brew is nice but nowhere near that good.

I thought the selection of songs this year was quite poor sadly and the event seemed very low key. Finding out about Azerbaijan was interesting but the night seemed a tad flat. The Twitter debate was quite fun though.

Of course there has been a lot of howling in the media about Engelbert Humpadink's poor performance, but this was far from surprising. He admitted himself the song was a "grower", which is hardly ideal for a Contest in which you need to make an instant impression. The song was also fundamentally unmemorable, a situation exacerbated by a poor draw which saw him on stage first. Furthermore, having four ballads as the opening five tracks meant his ballad was somewhat drowned out. He was an excellent vocalist in a Contest of excellent vocalists so it's hardly surprising he got overlooked. He didn't really offer much else.

The "political" voting charge has once again been cited as a reason to withdraw from the competition but I am not sure this is such a massive issue. I think countries vote for their neighbours primarily due to a matter of shared identity - it is far more likely that two neighbouring countries will have similar musical tastes, proclivities, values and backgrounds than two countries far apart. The main political influence I can see is that politics once imbued a shared culture as many smaller independent nations used to make up one much larger one. This element of commonality in terms of culture, I think, explains such voting.

Even if you accept "political" voting as an issue, the reality is that the general outcome of the Contest is rarely unchanged. The best or most memorable songs usually end up in the top five and the winners are usually those expected. I wasn't a fan of Sweden's track this year - it sounded like any other generic club hit from the last 20 years - but it was upbeat and unique in the Contest, hence its success. The Russian grannies finishing second emphasises this point.

If you compare this to the Hump, you can see why an anti British argument is fallacious. Euphoria, the Swedish winner, has been number one in many European countries including its homeland. Compare this with Humpadink who hasn't had a UK top 10 since 1970. If your own countrymen can't get behind your song then how do you expect other nations to support it? The reality is "political" voting aside, the UK's entry finished roughly where it should have done. Maybe slightly lower than was just but not much lower.

The problem with those complaining is that they take the ESC too seriously yet the problem with the UK in general is that it doesn't take Eurovision seriously enough. The UK has a global reputation in music and Europeans know this. And when they see our entries to a Contest which they take extremely seriously, is it any wonder why they don't vote for us. Put frankly they think the UK is taking the piss.

Friends in the music industry have confirmed this to be the case, far more then any perceived anti-British sentiment. If that were true, the UK wouldn't have won it five times in the past. So in summary, even though there may be some flaws in the voting system, pulling out would be a dramatic overreaction. In the last 10 years the UK has finished pretty much where it should have done. Looking closet to home should be the message.

I won't rehash it here, but if you want a detailed explanation of what Memorial Day is all about and why it is a very important holiday to a majority of Americans, then you should check out usmemorialday.org.

TERA Censorship Solves Everything!

Why did Frogster censor its MMO TERA when it seemed like no one was calling for them to do so? We don't know, but Andrew Eisen explores the whole affair in his latest video, and channels perhaps the creepiest person I have ever seen on a YouTube video. You'll know it when you see it..

We also discuss the issue in the latest episode of the podcast just for fun...

As always, you can check out all of Andrew's videos on his YouTube channel.

  • Sandra: The sun is a plasma ball, inside of which energy is generated by nuclear fusion of helium nuclei into hydrogen.

  • Woo: Yeah, I figured you made that up when you mixed up helium and hydrogen.

Slightly Foxed

lupestripe
8:42pm

The Dewsbury Real Ale Festival may be small but there is still an agreeable range of beers to try. 75 to be exact, plus ciders and continentals, of which I had already tried all but two. Hardknott was one of them.

Sorvall came up from darn sarf to attend along with the Leeds furs who had not gone to Confuzzled. This made seven of us, including Ki Saro whose first ale festival it was, and a really relaxed evening of imbibing and chatting was on the cards. I tried delicious beer from the Slightly Foxed Brewery brewery before attempting to order some for my own pub. Skavi did the Polish. Sadly there was no pie and peas but I did have a chorizo burger for my tea, which was nice but could have been spicier.

Afterwards some of us split while the rest went to North Bar for more high strength ales. I had been drinking 6% stuff most of the evening so accidentally knocked some Brew Dog on Wolfie's pantaloons. He was not happy! Still a good night was had - I do like attending beer festivals - so hopefully we can do the same again. The only downer was it was inside on such a glorious sunny day. Still, can't be helped.

EUROVISION

Sweden won last night with 'Euphoria' by Loreen in the city of Baku in Azerbaijan. Leaving the mighty nation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland second to last ahead of a dancy club hit from an Iranian-Norwegian.

Do you think it's time we pulled out of this contest indefinitely? Not just us but when you look at nations like Slovakia, Italy or France who just get nowhere. The only favourites seem to be Eastern European, Eurasian, Israeli/Turkish or Scandinavian leaving us to the West as "just happy to be here" while shelling out the most money to fund it.

The issue of who can afford to host it should not be an issue to who wins it because then they should not even take part and as if our country isn't anti-Europe enough as it is, I believe this competition exacerbates our pre-programmed xenophobia. The sad fact is that nations within Europe do not hate each other as much as they hate the UK and France and this competition just presents a platform upon which we bitterly feel we can never be European and will ever remain the left arm of the United States.

Dear Frank,
If I had a son and he was at a party, watched a girl drink more than she meant to, saw her pass out, and made the decision to rape her... I would blame him. He would be a rapist.

-----Email-----
I was raped after attending a frat party freshman year. I hope the daughter of the parent who sent this never goes through that; knowing I wouldn't have my parents' support made me never report it.

-----Email-----
My sister went to a frat party alone, drank shots on an empty stomach, and passed out on the couch. No one raped her. Someone made her an omelet.

Dear Frank,

Last night, I attended your PostSecret Event at the University of Oregon. Not only was I blown away by you and everything you do and the secrets that others have shared with you, but I was blown away by the community I am lucky to be a part of.

For months, I have felt so alone here. Last night, I decided to share my secret at the microphone. Right after, I received a hug from the stranger behind me. Not a pity hug, I could feel that she really meant it. After the show, I was approached again a few times and received encouraging words from people I knew and also total strangers. When I returned to my dorm room, I was Facebook messaged by an acquaintance, and emailed by a girl whom I didn't know, but recognized me from a mutual class. It was all so touching, honestly.

Here I have been, in my dorm room for months thinking I'm the loneliest girl in the world, while I'm surrounded by this wonderful community of caring people. What I'm really trying to say is, thank you, Frank, for bringing me closer to my community. And GO DUCKS!

-----Email-----
To the girl that mentioned she was at the Post Secret show at the University of Oregon...
I was the stranger behind you that hugged you.  Your story gives me hope, and even though we are different people with different problems, your story hit home.

-----Email-----
Dear Frank,

I was one of the people that got up to share my secret recently at the Stockton PostSecret event.

I just wanted to share with you just how special it was for me.

I knew that if I could share my secret, the deepest one of all, that I would feel better. When it came time for members of the audience to share, I almost chickened out, I was shaking; I was terrified. I got the first few words out, but I was too overcome to make a single sentence.

And then a girl stood. She walked over, opened her arms, and hugged me. This total stranger, I felt, cared deeply for me. I had never seen her before, nor did I find her after you were finished. But she gave me the courage. Even now, I have goose bumps as well as a feeling of total elation.

It is things like this that give me hope for the future. If a room full of total strangers can band together and support and accept one another unconditionally, then I believe that we're moving in the right direction. PostSecret is so much more than a movement. I truly think that it is a revolution.
