Smile, Smile, Smile - Pinkie Pie
I can listen to this song everyday and not get tired of it. I would like it as much as I do even if it had nothing to do with ponies, that’s how good a song I find it.

We hold an annual Eurovision party at our house and this year was no exception. It's just a small gathering but it's usually one of the best nights of the year. Saturday evening was no exception.
I have always loved Eurovision. Partly because it appeals to my political sensibilities but also because it's great fun. Yes it's cheesy and a little crap but there is a place for that in this world, particularly when times are tough for so many people.
We imbibed Pupschlager during the Contest and I was delighted to hear Skavi tell me it was better than anything he had had at the Dewsbury Beer Festival the night before. I'll admit our brew is nice but nowhere near that good.
I thought the selection of songs this year was quite poor sadly and the event seemed very low key. Finding out about Azerbaijan was interesting but the night seemed a tad flat. The Twitter debate was quite fun though.
Of course there has been a lot of howling in the media about Engelbert Humpadink's poor performance, but this was far from surprising. He admitted himself the song was a "grower", which is hardly ideal for a Contest in which you need to make an instant impression. The song was also fundamentally unmemorable, a situation exacerbated by a poor draw which saw him on stage first. Furthermore, having four ballads as the opening five tracks meant his ballad was somewhat drowned out. He was an excellent vocalist in a Contest of excellent vocalists so it's hardly surprising he got overlooked. He didn't really offer much else.
The "political" voting charge has once again been cited as a reason to withdraw from the competition but I am not sure this is such a massive issue. I think countries vote for their neighbours primarily due to a matter of shared identity - it is far more likely that two neighbouring countries will have similar musical tastes, proclivities, values and backgrounds than two countries far apart. The main political influence I can see is that politics once imbued a shared culture as many smaller independent nations used to make up one much larger one. This element of commonality in terms of culture, I think, explains such voting.
Even if you accept "political" voting as an issue, the reality is that the general outcome of the Contest is rarely unchanged. The best or most memorable songs usually end up in the top five and the winners are usually those expected. I wasn't a fan of Sweden's track this year - it sounded like any other generic club hit from the last 20 years - but it was upbeat and unique in the Contest, hence its success. The Russian grannies finishing second emphasises this point.
If you compare this to the Hump, you can see why an anti British argument is fallacious. Euphoria, the Swedish winner, has been number one in many European countries including its homeland. Compare this with Humpadink who hasn't had a UK top 10 since 1970. If your own countrymen can't get behind your song then how do you expect other nations to support it? The reality is "political" voting aside, the UK's entry finished roughly where it should have done. Maybe slightly lower than was just but not much lower.
The problem with those complaining is that they take the ESC too seriously yet the problem with the UK in general is that it doesn't take Eurovision seriously enough. The UK has a global reputation in music and Europeans know this. And when they see our entries to a Contest which they take extremely seriously, is it any wonder why they don't vote for us. Put frankly they think the UK is taking the piss.
Friends in the music industry have confirmed this to be the case, far more then any perceived anti-British sentiment. If that were true, the UK wouldn't have won it five times in the past. So in summary, even though there may be some flaws in the voting system, pulling out would be a dramatic overreaction. In the last 10 years the UK has finished pretty much where it should have done. Looking closet to home should be the message.

On behalf of everyone here at GamePolitics we wish our readers a safe and happy holiday. We hope you are enjoying your extended weekend (assuming you had an extended weekend and didn't have to work for the "man" today) and are out having fun on the unofficial start of summer.
I won't rehash it here, but if you want a detailed explanation of what Memorial Day is all about and why it is a very important holiday to a majority of Americans, then you should check out usmemorialday.org.

Why did Frogster censor its MMO TERA when it seemed like no one was calling for them to do so? We don't know, but Andrew Eisen explores the whole affair in his latest video, and channels perhaps the creepiest person I have ever seen on a YouTube video. You'll know it when you see it..
We also discuss the issue in the latest episode of the podcast just for fun...
As always, you can check out all of Andrew's videos on his YouTube channel.

In Episode 4 of the Super Podcast Action Committee, Andrew Eisen and E. Zachary Knight talk about censorship in the European version of Frogster's MMO TERA (check out Andrew's latest YouTube video for some context on the discussion), and the controversy over game cloning - this time involving an iOS game from Ustwo called Papa Quash that copied the mechanics from the popular PlayStation Move title from Die Gute Fabrik - J.S. Joust.

- Woo: Sandra, what’s the sun?
- Sandra: The sun is a plasma ball, inside of which energy is generated by nuclear fusion of helium nuclei into hydrogen.
- Woo: Really??
- Sandra: Haha, no, that was just pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo. The Sun is a giant burning paper ball.
- Woo: Yeah, I figured you made that up when you mixed up helium and hydrogen.

The Dewsbury Real Ale Festival may be small but there is still an agreeable range of beers to try. 75 to be exact, plus ciders and continentals, of which I had already tried all but two. Hardknott was one of them.
Sorvall came up from darn sarf to attend along with the Leeds furs who had not gone to Confuzzled. This made seven of us, including Ki Saro whose first ale festival it was, and a really relaxed evening of imbibing and chatting was on the cards. I tried delicious beer from the Slightly Foxed Brewery brewery before attempting to order some for my own pub. Skavi did the Polish. Sadly there was no pie and peas but I did have a chorizo burger for my tea, which was nice but could have been spicier.
Afterwards some of us split while the rest went to North Bar for more high strength ales. I had been drinking 6% stuff most of the evening so accidentally knocked some Brew Dog on Wolfie's pantaloons. He was not happy! Still a good night was had - I do like attending beer festivals - so hopefully we can do the same again. The only downer was it was inside on such a glorious sunny day. Still, can't be helped.
